Spec Sale
BusinessDefinition: A spec sale is the purchase of a completed spec script by a production company or studio. It is the lottery ticket of screenwriting — a writer finishes a script on their own time, puts it on the market, and a buyer acquires it outright or against a production bonus. Spec sales range from low five figures to seven figures depending on the project.
Understanding Spec Sale
The spec market runs in cycles. The late 1980s and 1990s were a golden age for spec sales — scripts sold for millions in bidding wars. The market cooled in the 2000s as studios shifted toward IP-driven franchises. It has partially rebounded as streaming services create enormous demand for content. A spec sale typically involves an agent or manager submitting the script to multiple buyers simultaneously, sometimes creating a bidding situation. The script needs a strong concept, excellent execution, and market timing. Most specs that sell are not produced as written — they are often rewritten extensively in development. But the sale is what launches a career. Even an unproduced spec sale establishes a writer's value and opens doors to assignment work.
Example in a Screenplay
SPEC SALE ANNOUNCEMENT (hypothetical): "THE LONG SHIFT, an original thriller by first-time screenwriter Maria Delgado about a 911 operator who receives a call from her own kidnapped daughter, sold to Lionsgate in a competitive bidding situation. Kerry Washington is attached to star. Undisclosed six-figure deal against mid-six with production bonus." (The logline sells the concept. The attachment sells the package. The competitive bid drives the price.)
Common Mistakes
Writing a spec specifically to sell it instead of writing the best possible script and then finding its market. Expecting a spec sale before your craft is at a professional level. Not having representation — unrepresented specs almost never reach buyers. Turning down a reasonable offer hoping for a bidding war that does not materialize.
