Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Free Screenwriter — the free screenwriting software with AI script coverage, legend feedback, and Final Draft compatibility.

Choosing Screenwriting Software

Is Free Screenwriter really free?

Yes, completely free forever. You get professional screenplay formatting, FDX import/export, PDF export, and story structure tools at no cost. There are no hidden fees, no trial periods, and no feature walls on the core writing experience. Optional AI credits ($5 for 10) and the Showrunner plan ($19/mo) unlock premium AI features, but you never need them to write, format, or export screenplays.

What's the catch? How do you make money?

There is no catch. The core screenwriting tools are free because we believe every writer deserves professional-grade software regardless of budget. Revenue comes from optional AI credit packs and the Showrunner subscription for writers who want deeper AI analysis and writing partnership features. The free tier is not a teaser — it is a fully functional screenwriting application.

How does Free Screenwriter compare to Final Draft?

Free Screenwriter offers the same industry-standard formatting as Final Draft but adds AI script coverage, legend feedback from 24 screenwriting voices, and hierarchical story structure tools — all for free. Final Draft costs $249.99 and has no built-in AI analysis or story structure features. Both support the FDX file format, so you can import your existing Final Draft projects instantly.

Can I import my Final Draft (FDX) files?

Yes. Free Screenwriter has full FDX import and export support. Your formatting, scene headings, character names, and dialogue all transfer cleanly. You can also export back to FDX at any time if you need to share files with collaborators who use Final Draft. There is no lock-in — your scripts remain portable.

How does Free Screenwriter compare to Arc Studio Pro?

Both offer cloud-based screenwriting, but Free Screenwriter includes AI script coverage, legend feedback, and the Showrunner AI writing partner that Arc Studio Pro does not provide. Our story structure system (Acts, Sequences, Beats, Scenes) gives you more granular control over narrative architecture. Arc Studio Pro charges $99/year for its pro features; our core tools are free.

What is the best free screenwriting software in 2026?

Free Screenwriter is the most feature-complete free screenwriting software available. It combines professional formatting, FDX compatibility, PDF export, hierarchical story structure, AI-powered script coverage, and feedback from 24 legendary screenwriter voices. No other free tool offers this combination. WriterSolo and Highland are alternatives, but neither includes AI analysis or structure tools at no cost.

Do professional screenwriters use Free Screenwriter?

Yes. Free Screenwriter was built by an award-winning screenwriter who needed better tools than what existed. The application is designed for professional workflows: industry-standard formatting, FDX interoperability with Final Draft, and AI coverage that mirrors the professional development process. Writers at every level — from first-timers to produced professionals — use it.

Can I use Free Screenwriter for TV pilots and episodic scripts?

Absolutely. Free Screenwriter supports feature screenplays, TV pilots, episodic television, and short films. The story structure system works for any format — whether you are building a three-act feature or a five-act television pilot. AI coverage and legend feedback adapt their analysis to the format and genre of your project.

About Free Screenwriter

Who built Free Screenwriter?

Free Screenwriter was created by Steven Ellis, an award-winning screenwriter with credits in political thrillers, TV pilots, and short films. He built it because existing screenwriting software was either expensive, outdated, or lacked the AI-powered development tools that modern writers need. The application reflects real professional screenwriting workflows, not a tech company’s guess at what writers want.

Is Free Screenwriter open source?

No, Free Screenwriter is not open source. The codebase is proprietary to protect the integrity of the AI models, the legend feedback system, and the user experience. However, your scripts are always yours. You can export to FDX or PDF at any time and take your work to any other application.

How is Free Screenwriter funded?

Revenue comes from two optional paid features: AI credit packs ($5 for 10 credits) that unlock additional coverage and legend feedback sessions, and the Showrunner subscription ($19/month) for premium AI writing partnership features. The core screenwriting tools — formatting, structure, FDX import/export, and PDF export — are free and always will be.

Is my screenplay data safe?

Yes. Your screenplays are stored securely in the cloud with encryption at rest and in transit. We do not read, share, or use your scripts to train AI models. Your creative work remains your intellectual property at all times. You can delete your account and all associated data whenever you choose.

What happens if Free Screenwriter shuts down?

Your scripts are never trapped. You can export every project to FDX (Final Draft format) or PDF at any time, giving you portable copies that work in any other screenwriting application. We recommend periodic exports as a backup practice regardless. The business model is sustainable through credit sales and Showrunner subscriptions.

Do you sell my data or scripts to third parties?

No, never. We do not sell, license, share, or monetize your personal data or screenplay content in any way. Your scripts are not used to train AI models, and your usage data is not sold to advertisers or data brokers. Our revenue comes entirely from optional paid features, not from exploiting user data.

Features

How does AI Script Coverage work?

AI Script Coverage follows the same three-step process used by professional Hollywood readers. First, it generates a detailed synopsis of your screenplay. Then it delivers a critical analysis covering story structure, character development, dialogue, pacing, and theme. Finally, it produces a scorecard with a PASS, CONSIDER, or RECOMMEND rating. The entire process takes under 60 seconds.

What is Legend Feedback?

Legend Feedback lets you receive script notes written in the voice and sensibility of 24 legendary screenwriters. Each legend analyzes your work through their unique creative lens — Sorkin focuses on dialogue and intellectual argument, Tarantino on tension and nonlinear structure, Ephron on emotional authenticity, Peele on subtext and social commentary. It is like having 24 different creative mentors read your script.

Which legendary screenwriters are available for Legend Feedback?

The current roster includes Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino, Billy Wilder, Nora Ephron, Charlie Kaufman, David Mamet, Diablo Cody, Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, Spike Lee, and 14 others spanning comedy, drama, thriller, horror, and independent film. Each legend brings distinct priorities, blind spots, and creative philosophies to their feedback on your screenplay.

What is Showrunner AI?

Showrunner is the premium AI writing partner ($19/month) that goes beyond analysis into active creative collaboration. It can help you break story, develop characters, workshop dialogue, brainstorm scene approaches, and work through structural problems in real time. While the free tier provides analysis-only AI, Showrunner is a creative thinking partner for writers who want a deeper AI collaboration.

What story structure tools are included?

Free Screenwriter uses a four-level hierarchical structure system: Acts contain Sequences, Sequences contain Beats, and Beats contain Scenes. This gives you full control over narrative architecture at every level of granularity. You can plan top-down from acts or build bottom-up from scenes. The structure panel updates in real time as you write.

Can I export my screenplay as a PDF?

Yes. PDF export produces an industry-standard screenplay format that is ready for submission to contests, agents, managers, and producers. The output follows established margin, font, and spacing conventions. You can export at any time during your writing process, whether your screenplay is two pages or two hundred.

Does Free Screenwriter support FDX files?

Full FDX (Final Draft) import and export is built in. You can bring in scripts from Final Draft, write or revise in Free Screenwriter, and export back to FDX for collaborators who use Final Draft. Scene headings, character elements, dialogue, transitions, and action lines all map correctly between formats. There is no formatting loss in the round trip.

Can I collaborate with other writers in real time?

Real-time collaboration is on the roadmap but not yet available. Currently, you can share scripts by exporting FDX or PDF files. The architecture is being built to support simultaneous multi-writer editing in a future release. For now, the FDX export makes it easy to work with writing partners who use any screenwriting application.

Is there a mobile app for Free Screenwriter?

Not yet. Free Screenwriter is currently a cloud-based browser application optimized for desktop and laptop screens. A mobile-responsive experience and dedicated mobile apps are planned for a future release. In the meantime, the browser version works on tablets in landscape mode for writers who want some portability.

Can I use Free Screenwriter offline?

Offline support is not available yet. Free Screenwriter requires an internet connection because it is a cloud-based application with server-side AI features. Offline mode with local caching and sync is a planned future feature. You can always export your latest draft as FDX or PDF before going offline as a backup.

How-To Guides

How do I start a new screenplay?

Sign up for a free account, then click "New Project" from your dashboard. Enter a title, select your format (feature, pilot, short), and you are immediately in the editor with professional formatting active. Start typing a scene heading and the formatter will auto-detect element types as you write — scene headings, action, character names, dialogue, and transitions.

How do I import an FDX file from Final Draft?

From your dashboard, click "Import" and select your .fdx file. Free Screenwriter parses the Final Draft XML format and maps every element — scene headings, action, characters, dialogue, parentheticals, and transitions — into your new project. The import typically completes in a few seconds, even for feature-length scripts. Your original FDX file is not modified.

How do I get AI Script Coverage on my screenplay?

Open your screenplay in the editor and select the Coverage option from the AI tools panel. The system analyzes your entire script in three passes: synopsis, critical analysis, and scorecard. Results appear in under 60 seconds. Free users get coverage included with their credits; additional coverage sessions are available through credit packs.

How do I use Legend Feedback?

From the AI tools panel, select Legend Feedback and choose which screenwriter voice you want notes from. You can select one legend at a time or run multiple passes with different voices to get varied perspectives on your script. Each legend returns targeted notes reflecting their known creative priorities — for example, Mamet on dialogue economy or Gerwig on character interiority.

How do I format a scene heading correctly?

Type INT. or EXT. at the start of a line and Free Screenwriter auto-formats it as a scene heading (slug line). Follow with the location and time of day — for example, INT. COFFEE SHOP - NIGHT. The formatter handles capitalization and spacing. You can also use I/E. for interiors/exteriors. Scene headings are automatically indexed in your structure panel.

How do I use the story structure tools?

Open the Structure panel alongside your script. Create Acts at the top level, then add Sequences within acts, Beats within sequences, and Scenes within beats. You can drag elements to reorder them and the script updates accordingly. This hierarchical approach lets you plan your narrative architecture at any level of detail before or during your writing process.

How do I export my screenplay as a PDF?

Click the Export button in the toolbar and select PDF. Your screenplay is rendered in industry-standard format with correct margins, Courier font, and page numbering. The PDF is ready for submission to competitions, representatives, or producers. You can also export as FDX from the same menu if you need Final Draft compatibility.

How do AI credits work?

Free accounts start with a set of complimentary credits for AI features like Script Coverage and Legend Feedback. Each AI action consumes one or more credits depending on the feature. When you need more, credit packs are available at $5 for 10 credits. Credits never expire. Showrunner subscribers ($19/month) receive a generous monthly credit allocation included in their plan.

How do I switch between screenplay element types while writing?

Free Screenwriter auto-detects most element types as you write. After a scene heading, new lines default to action. Pressing Enter twice after action creates a character name cue. After a character name, the next line becomes dialogue. You can also manually switch element types using the format dropdown in the toolbar. The editor learns your writing rhythm and anticipates transitions.

Industry & AI Ethics

Is Free Screenwriter WGA-compliant?

Yes. The free tier uses AI strictly for analysis — script coverage, structural evaluation, and legend feedback are all reading and analyzing your work, not writing for you. This mirrors how professional readers and development executives function. The Showrunner tier offers AI writing partnership features for writers who want that creative collaboration, with full transparency about AI involvement.

Will AI replace screenwriters?

No. AI is a tool, not a replacement for human creativity, lived experience, and emotional truth. Free Screenwriter uses AI the way a professional writer uses a trusted reader or development executive: to get a critical perspective on work that was conceived, structured, and written by a human mind. The best screenplays will always come from writers who have something to say.

Can studios or competitions tell if I used AI tools?

Free Screenwriter’s analysis tools do not add any text to your screenplay. Coverage, legend feedback, and structural analysis produce notes for you — they do not alter your script. Your screenplay remains 100% your own writing. There is nothing embedded in your exported FDX or PDF files that indicates AI tool usage. Your creative decisions are yours alone.

What is the difference between AI analysis and generative AI?

AI analysis reads your existing work and provides feedback, scoring, and structural observations — like a human reader giving notes. Generative AI creates new text, dialogue, or story content. Free Screenwriter’s free tier is analysis-only. The Showrunner premium tier includes generative features for writers who want an AI creative partner alongside their own writing process.

Are screenplays written with Free Screenwriter accepted in competitions?

Yes. Free Screenwriter exports to industry-standard PDF format accepted by every major screenwriting competition, including the Nicholl Fellowship, Austin Film Festival, PAGE Awards, and all others. The formatting meets professional standards. Since the free tier AI is analysis-only, there are no competition compliance concerns about AI-generated content in your submission.

Can I submit screenplays written here to agents and managers?

Absolutely. The PDF and FDX exports produce professional-grade files indistinguishable from those created in Final Draft or any other industry-standard application. Agents, managers, and producers care about the quality of your writing and story, not which software you used to format it. Free Screenwriter’s formatting meets every industry expectation.
