Definition: The midpoint is a major story event occurring roughly halfway through the screenplay (around page 55 in a 110-page script) that raises stakes, shifts the protagonist's approach, or reframes the central conflict. It divides Act II into two distinct halves and prevents the narrative from sagging.

Understanding Midpoint

Act II is the longest act, and without a midpoint, it drifts. The midpoint provides a structural fulcrum. It often takes one of two forms: a false victory (the protagonist thinks they have won, but the real fight is ahead) or a false defeat (everything collapses, forcing a new strategy). In "Alien," the midpoint is the chestburster scene — the crew shifts from investigation to survival. In "The Godfather," it is Michael shooting Sollozzo. The midpoint often moves the protagonist from reactive to proactive, or reveals information that changes what the story is actually about. It is the turn that keeps the audience from checking their phone.

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

The jury foreman stands.

                    FOREMAN
          We find the defendant... not guilty.

Celebration from the defense table. ANNA shakes her
client's hand, triumphant.

Then her phone buzzes. She reads the text. Her face drains.

INSERT: Text message: "Wrong man. The real killer knows
your name."

Common Mistakes

Writing an Act II with no midpoint at all — the middle of the script feels aimless. Making the midpoint too subtle for the reader to register as a structural turn. Placing it too early or too late, which distorts the act balance. Confusing the midpoint with a subplot beat. The midpoint is a main plot event that redefines the central conflict.
